  • Surprising Syros

Although it has an airport, Syros has somehow missed out on becoming a destination, all the more surprising when one takes a close look at it. The other Cycladic islands are variations on a theme, based on the aesthetics of fishermen and peasants; the iconic cubic houses, cane roofs and whitewash are the stuff of poverty. Ironic when one considers what a house on Mykonos can cost.

Syros is different, yes, it has a medieval citadel with the usual twisting lanes and alleys, the usual whitewash and little terraces, yes, it has the cute fishing villages and small harbours, but it also has another face –  that of prosperous 18th and 19th Century merchants, captains, and Venetian, French, Ottoman and British diplomats. They built  mansions, noble villas and  grand piazzas,   a casino,  and even a replica of La Scala where ballets and operas are still performed.  The Syriani are aware of their heritage, and their manners and habits are milder and more courteous than elsewhere, their pride in their island and its food and traditions is palpable. As the capital of the Cyclades with 30,000 inhabitants, Syros is a proper island all year round, great for off season visits.

  • Residence in Syros II by Block722

Situated in the island of Syros, this summer house hosts a family of four and their guests. The steep and intense topography dominated the design process.

A massive staircase leads to a gradual descent from the top towards the house, intensifying the experience of the cycladic landscape. The entrance is surrounded by the higher volumes of the main areas of the house, ending the descent path, then opening immediately to an ample view of the Aegean.

  • Grexit deluxe

  • A Pair of Summer Houses on Syros, Greece by Block722 Architects

Athens-based architecture studio Block 722 designed this attractive pair of holiday houses on the Greek island of Syros, a popular summer destination for Greeks and foreigners alike. Dubbed Syros I and Syros II, each of the two houses is spacious enough to accommodate a family and their guests, since they both have guest rooms that are discreetly detached from the main house, as well as ample outdoor space for socialising and relaxing. Ideally aligned with the breathtaking view over Plagia bay, the two residences merge gracefully with their surroundings by adapting to the topography and the use of local stonework and other Cycladic architectural characteristics.

  • RESIDENCE IN SYROS I / BLOCK 722

Situated in the island of Syros, this summer house hosts a couple and their guests. The design process was defined by the clients’ desire to maximize the view of the Plagia bay. The main intention was to unify the various spaces of the house under one roof facing the Aegean, without creating a massive volume, thus resulting in a deconstructed rectangle with massive openings from all sides.

The entrance is situated in the back, following a gentle descent through continuous miniature courtyards, planted with local aromatic herbs. The main volume houses the common areas, whereas the slightly higher volume, covered in local masonry houses the couple’s private area. The volumes are set next to each other, under a united roof slab, facing the magnificent view of the bay.

  • Summer House in Syros / block722

From the architect. Situated in the island of Syros I (plan view left), this summer house hosts a family and their guests. The design process was defined by the clients’ desire to maximize the view of the Plagia bay.

The main intention was to unify the various spaces of the house under one roof facing the Aegean, without creating a massive volume, thus resulting in a deconstructed rectangle with massive openings from all sides. In a similar way Syros II (plan view right) uses the same technique in terms of built volume accommodating itself however gently into the steep and intense topography of the site.
